Have life, will travel

The last year of basic schooling should be spent en route. All kids should be traveling for at least a year to integrate real, tangible learning about life and the world outside their own little bubble. This should also include traveling on their own.

Regardless of where they’re going in the world, they need to be faced with a reality specifically not their own. Young people need to cut the ties with their parents, general backgrounds and the school they’re at (which, by the way, should administer this one year trek into self knowledge).

If some kids can’t afford their own journey, the school and the community in general should pay for them. The logic being that a better individuated young person will give back more to the community on every level – including the least important but most talked about: the economy.

After between nine and twelve years of tiresome theoretical schooling, it will be refreshing for the students to be thrust out into adventure and real learning. It will help them become responsible and solid citizens of a better functioning society.

Have life, will travel. Have travel, will live.
